These terms apply to gosekai.app and the GoSekai app (“GoSekai”), provided by Alexander Schmidt (see the Impressum). By using GoSekai you agree to them.
1. What GoSekai is
GoSekai helps you learn the Japanese vocabulary of anime episodes before you watch them. GoSekai does not host or stream video and does not provide subtitles: you watch episodes through services of your choice. Word lists are derived from how often words are said and may contain mistakes. Please report a wrong word from the word’s menu in the app.
GoSekai is not affiliated with any studio, rights holder or streaming service. Series titles belong to their rights holders.
2. Free use and accounts
Using GoSekai needs a free account. Without paying, you can learn the first episode of two shows you pick, try the first words of a few more shows, and review every word you have learned. What is free is described in the app and may change for new users.
To create an account you must be at least 16 years old and give a valid email address, or sign in with Google. Keep your password confidential. An account keeps your progress and purchases in sync across your devices. You can delete your account at any time in the app or as described on gosekai.app/delete-account.
3. Premium
Premium opens every episode of every show, new shows as they arrive, and more progress statistics. Premium is a subscription sold and billed by Google Play under Google Play’s terms: Google is the seller, and payment, cancellation and refunds go through your Google Play account.
- The price, the billing period and any free trial are shown in the app before you buy.
- The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel it in Google Play. After you cancel, Premium stays active until the end of the period you have paid for.
- A free trial becomes a paid subscription when it ends unless you cancel before then. Each account can use one free trial.
- Premium belongs to your GoSekai account. Sign in with the same account to use it on another device.
- Your statutory rights, including any right of withdrawal, are not affected.
4. Gift codes and friend rewards
A gift code gives Premium for the time stated with it, can be redeemed once, and needs an account. When a friend you invited creates an account and finishes a first batch, you both get an extra free episode, for up to three friends. Gift codes and rewards have no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money or transferred. We may withdraw rewards obtained by abuse, such as creating accounts to invite yourself.
5. The beta
Before GoSekai launches on Google Play, up to 20 testers can try it in a closed test on Google Play (the beta), after signing up at gosekai.app/beta. The beta runs under Google Play’s terms for testing and these terms. The test version may contain errors, and features may change or be removed.
As a thank-you, testers get Premium free of charge while they test (beta Premium). It turns on in the app for one GoSekai account, the one that signs in with the email address of a confirmed beta signup, once Google Play confirms that the app came from Google Play (see the privacy policy). Beta Premium runs for 30 days at a time and renews when you open the app during the test. On the day GoSekai launches on Google Play, it becomes Premium for life for every tester who is still testing then: the app was opened in the 7 days before, and it is updated to the last beta version. After launch, beta Premium can no longer be turned on. It is a gift, not payment, and you owe nothing in return. Like a gift code, it has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money or transferred.
We ask you to stay a tester until GoSekai launches and to tell us what you think, but you can leave at any time. If you leave before launch, beta Premium ends when its current 30 days run out. We may end the beta at any time. Premium for life that you already have stays, including Premium from a beta gift code we sent before beta Premium moved into the app.
6. Fair use
Do not misuse GoSekai: do not attempt to access other people’s data or accounts, disrupt or overload the service, get around the limits of the free use, sign others up for anything, or extract its data by automated means beyond what the licences on our credits page allow. We may suspend an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, after warning you where that is reasonable.
7. Content and licences
Dictionary data is adapted from JMdict and licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, as set out on the credits page. The GoSekai name, logo, artwork and software are ours. Your learning history is yours: you can delete it with your account, and our privacy policy explains your other rights, such as getting a copy.
8. Availability and changes to GoSekai
We work to keep GoSekai available and your data safe, but cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability. We improve GoSekai over time and may change features. We will not reduce what Premium includes during a period you have already paid for. If we ever stop offering Premium or GoSekai, we will tell subscribers and account holders in advance.
9. Liability
We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, and under the German Product Liability Act. For slight negligence we are liable only for breach of an obligation essential to the purpose of these terms, and then limited to the damage typical and foreseeable at the time. Otherwise our liability is excluded.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms for good reason, such as new features or legal requirements. The date at the top shows the current version. We will tell account holders about material changes before they take effect. If you do not agree to a change, you can stop using GoSekai, cancel Premium in Google Play and delete your account.
11. Law
German law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
